The State Museum packs a lot of educational programming into four large floors in its beautiful, historic building beside the scenic Congaree River in Columbia, the capital city of South Carolina. Check out the many programs available.

The museum is housed in its “biggest artifact,” the renovated 1893 Columbia Mill, which is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and was the world’s first totally electric textile mill.

The exhibits and programs in the museum’s four disciplines — art, history, science and technology and natural history — will enable you to help your students meet curriculum standards.

Hands-on, inquiry-based Gallery Lessons provide a more in-depth experience than guided tours and are offered in all subject areas.

Programs coordinated with state curriculum standards also are available in three other areas at the State Museum. NatureSpace offers interactive natural history lessons for students in K4 through 6th grade. Science Theatre offers exciting science programs for students in K4 through 12th grade.

Tours and Self-guided tours are available of the entire museum, as well as in specific subject areas.

Once you have decided which programs are right for your students, you are ready to make your Reservations. You also will be ready to learn about chaperon requirements and other Things to know before arrival.

Home Schools are encouraged to participate in State Museum programming. You can reserve any school program available at the museum. We do ask that there be at least 10 children in your group.

Upon request, the museum will provide free Teacher Workshops. The museum also has a number of Starlab Programs available for teachers, such as Starlab, the portable planetarium.

Join us at the State Museum for a fun educational experience that will help you meet the state curriculum standards.
