STARLAB
A Portable, inflatable planetarium dome that accommodates up to 30 students. It is complete with everything needed for planetarium demonstrations: projection cylinders, program outlines, student activities and assessment guides. Lessons are linked to S.C. Science Curriculum Standards. Four-week noticed required.
PROGRAMS
Constellations (Grades 1-4) Discover mysteries of the stars by learning to recognize Polaris, the Milky Way and Sirius, as well as the major constellations, such as the Southern Cross, Cassiopeia, Ursa Major, Ursa Minor, and Orion.
Seasons (Grades 2-4) Learn about the reasons for the seasons in this lesson
Moon Phases (Grades 4-5) Investigate moon phases and tidal cycles to learn how tide-producing forces affect seashores.
African Mythology (Grades 2-6) Learn how constellation figures as seen by many African cultures the Dogon, Bushmen, Masai and Egyptians — marked key events, such as the beginning of the planting season, and signified important moral lessons.
Native American Mythology (Grades 2-6) See the night sky through the eyes of various Native American tribes— Navajo, Shoshoni, Cherokee, Hopi, and others— and learn how the stars ushered in the seasons and how they explained the various phenomena of nature.
Weather (Grades 6-12) Students will learn about Earth’s atmospheric circulation patterns, including location of wind systems, jet streams, and high and low air pressure masses. They also will explore storm and pressure systems, longitude and latitude coordinate plotting and other global weather phenomena.
Continents Adrift (Grades 8-12) Investigate Earth’s crustal plates, trenches, rift zones, volcanic activity and more for evidence of the theories of continental drift, sea floor spreading and plate tectonics.
FEES
Option one Select one or two StarLab programs. $300 per day up to four programs of 30 students for each program. Maximum total of 120 students per day. Programs taught by museum instructor. Earliest program time is 9 a.m. Fees include cost of instructor; setup and pick-up; lessons; and activities. If overnight travel is required by Instructor, actual lodging costs will be added to the $300 fee.
Option two Select one or two StarLab programs. $500 per week (Monday-Friday) with half-day teacher training workshop if requested. Fee includes cost of teacher training, setup and pick-up, lessons, activities and mileage.
Option three With advance notice, StarLab presentations are available on-site at the South Carolina State Museum. The cost is $3.00 per person, with a minimum of 10 required. To reserve Starlab, contact Group Visits: (803) 898-4999 or email groupvisits@museum.state.sc.us
Very Important Starlab Information
Room
size: We need a room with at least 11' ceilings and 24' floorspace in
both directions. The dome is intended for inside use only.
Generally,
presentations start no earlier than 9:00am; however, this is
negotiable, depending on the driving distance from the Museum.
- We can do four 45-minute programs per day.
- When possible we’re happy to customize program content to meet your needs.
- The dome can handle a total of 30 individuals.
- An invoice (to be paid within 30 days after the event) will be mailed/faxed to you.
- We
will call a week before your program date to work out a schedule. If
